As a body armor manufacturer founded in 1986, U.S. Armor Corporation is marking a milestone few companies in this industry ever reach: four decades of building protection that officers trust and actually want to wear. This year we are Celebrating 40 Years of design, testing and tailor-made craftsmanship, and of the people who make every vest, plate and carrier possible.
Our story did not start in a boardroom. It started with a family that understood what it means to go into harm’s way, and with a simple belief that has guided us ever since: the best armor is the armor you will wear. Here is a look back at how we got here, what still sets us apart, and where we are headed next.
Four Decades as a Trusted Body Armor Manufacturer
Since 1986, U.S. Armor has grown from a small family operation into a body armor manufacturer recognized as one of the most respected names in ballistic protection. We are a major supplier to domestic and international armor markets, and our products can be found on elite military units and on federal, state and local law enforcement agencies around the world.
What makes that reach meaningful is not the number of vests shipped. It is the outcome. U.S. Armor products have saved the lives of hundreds of law enforcement personnel worldwide, including officers as far away as Costa Rica. Every one of those saves represents a family that welcomed someone home after a life-threatening incident on the job. For a body armor manufacturer, there is no better measure of success.
Today our client base spans law enforcement, SWAT, DEA, Border Patrol, corrections, military, rescue and private security professionals, and a growing number of international agencies now choose U.S. Armor for its comfort and quality. If you are new to our lineup, our guide to law enforcement body armor is a good place to start.
A Legacy That Began Before 1986

The U.S. Armor story reaches back to Richard Armellino, Sr., father of current U.S. Armor president Stephen Armellino. Richard, known to friends as Dick, was a decorated World War II and Korean War pilot who flew missions wearing heavy flak jackets. He knew firsthand how much protection mattered, and how much a bulky, uncomfortable jacket could get in the way.
In 1969, Dick founded American Body Armor (ABA), one of the first body armor companies in America. Through years of research and development, he pioneered some of the very first patents and designs for what we now call body armor.
Stephen picked up where his father’s legacy left off by establishing U.S. Armor Corporation in 1986. He carried those original designs into the 21st century with breakthrough material blends and uncompromising product quality, and he built a body armor manufacturer where innovation and protection go hand in hand.
“You’ll Wear It” Body Armor, Built in the USA
Ask any veteran officer why armor ends up in a locker instead of on a body and the answer is usually the same: it is hot, stiff or does not fit. That is exactly the problem we set out to solve as a body armor manufacturer. Our combined leadership brings more than 100 years of experience in design and innovation, and all of it is focused on producing safe, comfortable “You’ll Wear It” body armor that saves lives year after year.

Being a Made in the USA body armor manufacturer is part of who we are. Keeping design, cutting and assembly close to home lets us control every detail, respond quickly to agency needs and stand behind the work with confidence. It is also why we can offer a lineup that ranges from concealable vests to ballistic plates, plate carriers and helmets.
Testing and Quality You Can Count On
Before any U.S. Armor product is released, it goes through extensive testing inside our own test facility to make sure it surpasses the requirements of the National Institute of Justice body armor compliance testing program. All of our testing follows the latest NIJ requirements. If you want to understand what those ratings mean, our breakdown on decoding NIJ ratings walks through it step by step.
Our in-house program goes well beyond a single certification test. It includes:
- Quality assurance testing of used ballistic vests
- Special threat testing
- Field training programs for customers and our field representatives
- Live shooting demonstrations
- Quality control testing of incoming ballistic materials
U.S. Armor is also an ISO 9001 certified body armor manufacturer, which means our quality control processes and procedures are documented, audited and continuously improved. That discipline is a big reason our armor performs the same way on day 1,000 as it did on day one.
High Performance Partnerships
Great armor starts with great materials, and no body armor manufacturer is better than its supply chain. We partner with the best ballistic material suppliers in the industry so that every new U.S. Armor vest design is lighter, thinner, cooler and more flexible, delivering ultimate comfort without sacrificing ballistic protection.
We are proud to say that no officer has ever been fatally injured by a round while wearing a U.S. Armor vest certified for that round of ammunition. That record has only been possible by scrupulously using processes and materials that have been proven not to fail.

Custom Fit and a Warranty That Has Your Back
U.S. Armor is known as the comfort-leading body armor manufacturer in the industry because our vests are custom-fitted and tailor-made to your frame. Our unique measuring system uses nine measurement points for men and 12 for women, so your ballistic vest fits right every time. Proper fit is not a luxury. It determines coverage, mobility and whether you will keep the vest on through a long shift. Learn more in our guide to wearing body armor and our female body armor guide.

We stand behind that fit, too. If you are not fully satisfied with your tailor-made U.S. Armor vest, you can return it within 60 days of the manufacturing date for free alterations or a full refund, excluding freight charges. U.S. Armor also extends a limited warranty on all of its bullet resistant vests and ballistic hard armor plates. To keep your armor performing for its full service life, see our body armor maintenance guide.
What 40 Years Means for the Next Generation
Anniversaries are a chance to look back, but for a body armor manufacturer they are mostly a reason to look ahead. Threats evolve, materials improve and the people who wear armor deserve better every year. Our commitment for the next 40 years is the same one Dick Armellino made more than half a century ago: build protection that is comfortable enough to wear and strong enough to trust.
That means continuing to invest in lighter materials, smarter designs for female officers, better multi-threat options and responsive service for agencies of every size. It also means listening to the officers, deputies, agents and security professionals who wear our gear and tell us what works in the real world.
To everyone who has worn, purchased, recommended or helped build U.S. Armor products over the past four decades: thank you. You are the reason we have been able to stay the most trusted name in body armor, and you are the reason we are proud to be a body armor manufacturer Celebrating 40 Years.
